What Does This Tell Us?
The gap between the top names is striking.
Tata Steel remains the clear institutional favourite, appearing in 386 mutual fund portfolios. That's significantly ahead of JSW Steel and Jindal Steel, making it the sector's consensus pick.
Meanwhile, SAIL and Jindal Stainless continue to attract broad participation, suggesting fund managers are looking beyond private-sector leaders when building steel exposure.
After the top five, ownership drops sharply. Stocks like Kirloskar Ferrous Industries and Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys appear in relatively few portfolios, highlighting that institutional participation becomes much more selective outside the industry's largest players.
Why This Matters
The most widely-held stocks are usually:
- Large and liquid companies
- Easier for institutional funds to accumulate
- Businesses with established market positions
- Core holdings for sector exposure
But popularity doesn't automatically mean better returns.
In fact, heavily-owned stocks can become crowded trades, while some lesser-owned companies may offer differentiated opportunities that only a few fund managers are willing to back.
That's why understanding **who everyone owns—and who they don't—**can provide valuable context before researching a sector.
